From 4pm till late on Saturday 15th April 2017, Shawn Lu presents his solo show, “Odyssey,” at Q Bank Gallery in Queenstown. If you can’t make it, here are the artworks that feature. For enquiries about sales, email qbankgallery@gmail.com.
Artist Statement:
Odyssey evokes old European fairy tales, inhabited by haunted characters and objects, eerily resisting the elements and their uncertain fate.
These themes have resided in Shawn’s work long before his trip to Queenstown. The Asian financial crisis of ’97 affected Singapore particularly hard. As did the European financial crisis before his travels around Eastern Europe in ’09. Both instances gave the artist a deeper understanding of the recent downturn in the economy of Queenstown, which he sought to capture symbolically.
Odyssey marks the end of Shawn’s three-month artist residency in Queenstown. While contemplating the finished body of works, he is reminded of a poem by Richard Brautigan from Loading Mercury with a Pitchfork:
“You Will Have Unreal Recollections of Me”
(For Rilke)
You will have unreal recollections of me
like half-developed photographs
for all the days of your life, even though
you have never met me because I have dreamt
you. Soon it will be morning, the dream
over.
